Bought a used car a week ago today, and spent much of yesterday buying stuff to outfit him (Marius). The objective is to have the following:
Roadside gear: get the car moving again after minor problems and protect the person making said repairs. Includes: jumper cables, flares, ice scraper, quart of oil, duct tape, shovel, bag of salt, fix-a-flat, tire iron, 3 or 4 D-cell Mag Light, work gloves, rain coat.
Emergency gear: deal with larger roadside problems. Includes: seat belt cutter/glass hammer, lifeboat rations, long shelf life water pouches, thermal blankets, candles, matches, first aid kit (trauma bag), fire extinguisher, extra batteries, light sticks, 50' of rope, toilet paper.
Utility gear: maps, tissue, hand wipes, power bars, water bottle.
So what do you keep in your car?

Well, not being the Master of Preparedness that you are, I fall a little bit short. My cars usually have:
The spare tire and tire iron that have come with every car
Jumper cables
First Aid kit or at least band-aids
Waterproof windbreaker with hood
Ice scraper
Reusable grocery bag or three
Box of tissue
a pen
small squeegee for the inside of the windows
A book from my to-read stack
A can of Mountain Dew or a bottle of water(usually both)
some sort of breakfast bar
The last two I usually eat on my way to work, so they are constantly rotated.
So it look like I'm one step ahead of you if I'm headed to the grocery store, but several miles behind otherwise;)
You also have a book, which is something I keep meaning to add.
