The Five Questions I refer to are:
Who are you?
What do you want?
Why are you here?
Where are you going?
Who do you serve, and who do you trust?
They are drawn from the TV shows "Babylon 5" and "Crusade". They are, I think, a very comprehensive set of questions that identify a person. Of course, because of that, they are virtually impossible to properly answer.

I think this happens a lot. There are often moments when i don't know why I'm upset; but I am.
My suggestion is just to tell them you care, that they can call you anytime, and that it's okay to be upset...even if they don't know why.
So, I feel like I'm sort of parroting what randomgirl said...
Tell them you care. Don't push them to "figure out" what's wrong.
Sigh. The problem is that both as a medic and as an engineer I'm trained to seek out the causes of problems and solve them.
As an engineer I actually get paid for it, and as a paramedic I was trained to do it with people, even with emotional problems to some extent.
